Estimation of Ice Flow Velocity of Calving Glaciers Using Sar Interferometry and Feature Tracking

چکیده
Changes in velocity of the large outlet glaciers and ice streams in Antarctica are important for ice sheet mass balance and hence sea level. The ice flow velocity is also a critical variable in understanding glacier dynamics. Polar Record Glacier, with a calved iceberg in front, is about 50 km to the west of the Zhongshan Station, East Antarctica. SAR interferometry can detect the surface displacement in cm even mm level, while only the displacement in the slant range could be obtained. Offset tracking techniques can estimate the displacement of the glacier and iceberg with the registration offsets of two SAR images in both slantrange and azimuth directions. Feature tracking can also obtain the 2-D displacement from the image sequences. This paper will use a combination of SAR interferometry, offset tracking and feature tracking to measure the ice flow velocity of the Polar Record Glacier and the calved iceberg.

Glaciers are sensitive indicators of climate fluctuations. The effects of climate warming are for instance evident in the continuous retreat of glaciers. In the paper, the movement of the Dongkemadi Glacier in the Qinhai-Tibetan Plateau and the Keqicar Baxi glacier motion in the Tianshan Mountains of western China are measured using two-pass differential synthetic aperture radar interferometry ...

Outlet glaciers undergo rapid spatial and temporal changes in flow velocity during calving events. Observing such changes requires both high temporal and high spatial resolution methods, something now possible with terrestrial radar interferometry. While a single such radar provides line-of-sight velocity, two radars define both components of the horizontal flow field. To assess the feasibility...

Glaciers are directly affected by the recent trends of global warming. Himalayan glaciers are located near Tropic of Cancer this belt receives more heat thus Himalayan glaciers are more sensitive to climate change. Major rivers of Asia originates from these glaciers and they are only source of fresh water for millions of people living in Indian sub-continent. Due to highly rugged terrain and in...
متن کاملCalving processes and the dynamics of calving glaciers
Calving of icebergs is an important component of mass loss from the polar ice sheets and glaciers in many parts of the world. Calving rates can increase dramatically in response to increases in velocity and/or retreat of the glaciermargin, with important implications for sea level change. Despite their importance, calving and related dynamic processes are poorly represented in the current gener...

Monitoring of ice velocity field is one of the key issues to glacier dynamics understanding. Surface velocity fields can provide useful information on phenomena such as glacier surges or ice fall. They can also reflect the effect of global warming on the dynamic of ice masses. Although the surface displacements of glaciers can be monitored locally with ground GPS points, this solution is diffic...
